When Lotte hurries across the cobblestones, all whispering ceases. The gazes that follow her are not envious, but full of respect. She is the woman who is called when a new life begins amidst the ruins. Lotte meets the everyday chaos with a warm smile and capable hands. The stoic calm with which she goes her way comes from another world—far removed from the urban bustle.
Summer 1943: While the cities sink under the hail of Allied bombs, the countryside remains largely quiet. Working as a midwife, Lotte lives on a sprawling old farm deep in the Hessian province. The war sends only silent harbingers: Every now and then, a stray aerial bomb tears deep craters into the nearby fields—but the old walls of the farm remain spared. Lotte pitches in everywhere on the farm. She helps in the kitchen, tends to the livestock, and holds together the community of fate made up of farmers' wives, maids, Eastern workers, and prisoners of war. Far from any romantic rural idyll, the rhythm of nature sets the pace and dictates the harsh everyday life. But as soon as a birth is announced, Lotte hops onto her rickety bicycle and hurries through wind and weather, day and night, to the most remote farms in the region. Between boiling water and the first cry of the newborns, Lotte learns to form structure out of chaos—a strength she will soon carry back to the city.
In the spring of 1945, the Americans roll onto the farm amidst the rattle of heavy engines. While the officers set up their command post in the main house, the Medical Corps transforms the large barn into a field hospital. Lotte is initially allowed to remain in her rural refuge, but has to move out of the main house into a small chamber right above the cow shed. With her experience as a midwife, she henceforth pitches in at the field hospital—medical necessity overrides strict military regulation. Amidst the smell of ether and camp beds, the Americans experience Lotte's unwavering pragmatism firsthand. The US Military Government in Frankfurt quickly recognizes the value of the experienced young midwife and sends her to the ruined metropolis plagued by disease and chaos, where she is unceremoniously assigned a small, makeshift lodging amidst the rubble.
Frankfurt am Main, June 1946: Countless times, Lotte has brought new life into the world—each single one of them a promise of tomorrow, an innocent new beginning for a shattered world. But this summer is different. Warming sunlight falls on the uneven cobblestones. Lotte crosses the street and walks resolutely past two Americans on patrol. Where other women seek a ticket to a new, better life in the occupiers, Lotte meets the men in uniform at eye level. She is no naive girl who can be lured with nylon stockings or chocolate. Lotte doesn't draw quick catcalls; she commands respect. In her strong, maternal presence, she exudes security and support without a single trace of self-sacrifice. To the homesick Americans, she conveys a piece of normality and reminds them of their peaceful homes across the pond. Lotte catches their glances and enjoys the genuine affection for this one fleeting moment. But she doesn't look back. With every step, she leaves the GIs further behind her and strides toward her own promise of tomorrow.
