The woman who shows men how little they know about women
Lona is only in her early thirties, but marked by life. She learned early on that in life, you take what you need. Her aura is at once sensual and weary. She knows exactly what she is doing—and even better, what others want to do. Men are drawn to her, but she decides how close anyone is allowed to get. People whisper about her in the neighborhood. Some consider her hardened, others see her as a woman who knows too much. But that leaves her cold. Lona is the woman who shows men how little they know about women.

Anyone asking about Lona in the bombed-out streets rarely hears the truth. A glance over her shoulder reveals everything: women put their heads together whispering, while the gazes of their husbands waver between feigned contempt and naked desire. To some, Lona is a danger; to others, a fallen girl who gets involved with anyone. Lona doesn't dignify the whispering with a single look. The truth runs far deeper.
Lona had to earn her knowledge of human nature the hard way. In endless, grueling shifts as a tram conductor, she experienced the microcosm of society in just a few square meters. She saw them all: the big shots, the party bosses, the exhausted female workers, the mothers with their frightened children, and the men in field grey on home leave. On Line 7, Lona learned to read faces like open books. She saw the loud boasting of the young recruits and the mute silence of the wounded. She saw the empty stomachs beneath expensive coats and the greed behind friendly words. She learned to distinguish genuine despair from feigned pity—and how quickly loud-mouthed arrogance turned into sheer, naked fear when the sirens wailed again. In agonizing hours in the dark cellars and bunkers, she grew increasingly numb—only to return afterward with her passengers to the burning remnants of the city, as if nothing had happened.
With the end of the war, the sirens disappear, but the struggle for survival remains. The Americans bring life back to the bombed-out cities—on their terms. For many young women, contact with the occupiers becomes a desperate lifeline they try to cling to. But Lona fills the role of the Fräulein in her very own, pragmatic way. She draws stares, but she sees right through the charmers in uniform before they even open their mouths. Anyone who thinks they can buy her with Hershey's chocolate and Lucky Strikes bounces right off her icy exterior. Lona shows men how little they know about women. She takes what she needs, as long as it serves her—but she dictates the rules.
Summer 1946—the dust of the mountains of rubble hangs heavily in the air. Lona stands amidst the destruction, completely untouched by this hostile environment. Behind her back, the daily tribunal of the street forms: Gazes bore into her neck, the venomous hissing of their judgments echoing softly through the ruins. Lona refuses to give them the satisfaction of a reaction. Routinely, she plants her hand on her hip, casually throws back the heavy, worn-out coat, and juts out her chin. It is the ice-cold, impenetrable pose of a woman who is the absolute master of the situation. Only for a fraction of a second—right as the click of the shutter sounds—does the facade drop, revealing the profound truth behind the myth: Her eyes betray a quiet, almost pleading longing for security. It is the naked gaze of a soul that has lost far too much and yet must remain strong—every single day. The vulnerability vanishes as suddenly as it came. Lona turns around wordlessly, leaving her judges standing in the ruins. But the camera captures what no one was supposed to see: the fragile truth behind the strongest woman in the city.
