The whirlwind in her family
Hanni is the whirlwind in her family. She learned early on how to hold her own against her five sisters—with words, with charm, and with a whole lot of contagious energy. Hanni talks fast, moves fast, and thinks fast—sometimes a bit impulsively, but always warmly. Men adore her, women respect her, and children idolize her. Hanni makes everyone laugh and gives them a sense of normality. She firmly believes that every smile makes the world just a little bit brighter again.

When Hanni whirls across the cobblestones, even the heavy rubble dust seems to dance in the air for a moment. The young childcare worker brings an innate, unshakable lightness to the gray backdrop of the post-war era. This cheerfulness is not an artificial shield, but her deepest nature—a bubbling spring of zest for life that simply refuses to dry up, despite all circumstances. Effortlessly, she fills the dusty streets with life.
Growing up means one thing above all for Hanni: carving out her own space. In the already cramped family home, she shares a room with her five sisters—she cannot afford to be quiet if she wants to be heard. Hanni knows how to assert herself: with words, with charm, and with a whole lot of contagious energy. She talks fast, moves fast, and thinks fast—sometimes a bit impulsively, but always fair and warm-hearted. Where the oppressive confinement of everyday life would suffocate many others, Hanni whirls through the rooms, transforming tedious housework into a shared game and even the simplest meal into a small feast. In doing so, she learns her most important lesson long before the war darkens the world beyond her own four walls: Laughter is much more than just a character trait—it is an indestructible shield—a weapon against any heaviness, which she, as an aspiring childcare worker, will very soon desperately need.
Her work as a childcare worker begins in a time that leaves no room for the needs of children. Hanni performs her duties within the rigid system of the National Socialist People's Welfare (NSV), which has long since grown into a machinery vital to the war effort. All mothers with fewer than three children are rigorously forced into the war economy. The daycare centers fill up inexorably—long since, even one- and two-year-olds are taken from their families and placed in state care. Thus, Hanni stands on the front line of an apparatus geared towards ideological conformity in accordance with Nazi ideology. Every trace of individuality is eyed with suspicion; every contravention is mercilessly prosecuted. She finds herself confronted with a double overwhelming force: constant surveillance by a system that relentlessly places the "Volksgemeinschaft" (people's community) above the individual, and the naked reality of war when the sirens wail during the day and she has to flee with the children into the nearest air-raid shelter. Hanni is powerless against the mandated coldness—but instead of capitulating, she uses the tiny pockets of freedom that remain: Where obedience is unavoidable, she sneaks in a smile; where strictness is demanded, she answers with a wink—a dangerous balancing act. She wraps her warmth around the children like an invisible armor to protect their souls, to some extent, from ideological hardening. But Hanni does not fight the system she has grown into—she fights for her conviction to preserve a piece of human warmth for the children and for herself.
Summer 1946: The dull thud of the stamp on her index card seals the completion of her denazification—and for Hanni, it is the starting signal for a completely new life. The political goal of uncompromisingly purging the educational apparatus of Nazi ideology is countered by naked reality: In order to catch the countless, uprooted war children, the US Military Government quickly reinstates the childcare workers. The oppressive ideological corset of the previous years finally lies in ruins. Amidst the rubble, Hanni counters the trauma with her imagination and gives the littlest ones back the feeling of being allowed to be a child again. But her charisma radiates far beyond the daycare center: Women respect her authentic, straightforward nature; men admire her for the carefree, overflowing energy that seemed to have disappeared from the world. Hanni makes everyone around her laugh and gives them back a long-forgotten sense of normalcy.
On the way home, the role of the childcare worker simply falls away from Hanni. Freed from the responsibility, the whirlwind she wasn't allowed to be for too long slowly emerges in her once again. While the olive-green Jeeps with their large white stars rattle across the cobblestones, Hanni encounters someone amidst the hustle and bustle of the street. Is it a familiar returnee? A GI on the side of the road? Or a charming stranger? Who this smile is meant for remains her secret. Hanni brings her hand to her lips and blows the unknown man a kiss. In a world marked by mistrust, hunger, and grief, she gives away her joy of living unconditionally—not because she ignores the suffering around her; she does it even though she sees the suffering. Her blown kiss comes from the heart and proves that pure energy always finds its way, even in the deepest desolation—and effortlessly whirls up the heaviest dust in the darkest ruins.
